Mission Blue

On the journey towards sustainability

When ecological values forge a new global identity, we’re on board. When the packaging industry embraces an intelligent, well-functioning circular economy to achieve ambitious climate targets, we’re on board. This is also what our Mission Blue stands for. Out of respect for people and the environment, we are committed to taking action – as a sustainable company with sustainable machines and as a development partner for sustainable packaging.

Sustainable business practices

Gerhard Schubert GmbH has been an official participant in the UN Global Compact Network Germany since August 2024 – thereby supporting the UN’s sustainability goals.

The United Nations initiative groups together ten principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption. Its comprehensive framework offers participating companies guidance on how to act responsibly towards people and the environment. The UN Global Compact network currently comprises some 20 000 participants from 167 nations.

“Sustainability has always been very important to us at Schubert. Reaffirming our commitment to more environmentally friendly behaviour is especially important to us against the backdrop of current global challenges. For this reason, we are participating in the UN Global Compact Network Germany association and are strongly committed to its ten principles,” explains Marcel Kiessling, Managing Director of Gerhard Schubert GmbH.

Our goal – our mission

Action originates from a mindset. This is what Schubert stands for. And what Mission Blue is all about – backed by our entire Schubert team. From management to HR and production, to the creative minds behind our technologies and packaging solutions. In this video, you’ll gain insight on the sustainability goals we are striving to achieve and how we are already implementing many of them.

Sustainability in concrete terms – four strategic fields of action

Schubert has defined four fields of action to translate the Mission Blue initiative into specific, tangible measures and verifiable facts. They encompass environmental, business-related and social aspects and are based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – the United Nations’ global goals for sustainable development. A team made up of several corporate divisions works in each field of action and is coordinated by a Schubert employee. Together, those responsible set targets for measurable sustainable activities, drive the process forward – together in partnerships – evaluate the results, and prepare our next sustainability report. You can find out more about the fields of action here:

01

Sustainable corporate governance

Keyvisual

Only satisfied employees can guarantee our company’s success. That’s why we do everything we can to ensure that they have everything they need and truly enjoy working for us. We cultivate long-term, solid entrepreneurial thinking to ensure job security and we support the people entrusted to us in every way – be it by balancing family and career, or meeting needs for ongoing education on their journey towards a healthier lifestyle. We also attach great importance to equality and diversity. We are aware of our responsibility towards our immediate surroundings, our site, the city and the region – and are committed to making and keeping them attractive.

02

Climate-neutral production

Keyvisual

Producing sustainably in the long term is an integral part of our ecological identity. A key factor here is the reduction of our CO2 balance, i.e. our carbon footprint. For this reason, we have started to equip our buildings with the latest technology to generate our own green electricity. We are also constantly working on using resources sparingly and avoiding waste. We work with regional suppliers and focus on value creation within Germany. But that is by no means enough for us: Our goal is to develop Schubert into a climate-neutral company within a few years.

Environmentally friendly machines & services

Keyvisual

Durability, flexibility and retrofitability: All of this is what makes our packaging machines so unique – and what makes them exceptionally sustainable. This increases the line’s effective service life to several decades; particularly as Schubert machines can also switch between conventional and new, more sustainable packaging materials. Moreover, our robot technology developed in-house ensures efficient processes and extremely gentle product handling – so that waste can be avoided from the outset. With our technologies, the switch to environmentally friendly packaging solutions succeeds in such a way that sustainability and cost-effectiveness can be reconciled - This is our customer promise.

04

Sustainable packaging

Keyvisual

One of the first steps towards more sustainable packaging is the packaging itself. With that in mind, we not only build packaging machines, we also work very closely with industry partners to develop new packaging materials. This refers to carton packaging as well as flow wrap films and thermoformed packaging. We test all prototypes directly in a packaging machine at our technical centre – and this benefits Schubert customers. Quite simply because environmentally friendly packaging is only useful if it is machine-compatible. But there is much more to it than packaging alone: There is significant potential for greener solutions throughout the entire supply chain. We support our customers here too with sound advice and expertise.

Sustainability is a global responsibility and obligation

Inspiring customers with sustainable packaging solutions is one aspect of our responsibility. The other is a commitment to act just as sustainably in operational management. Schubert takes this very seriously. And this is why we are committed to the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals. In our four fields of sustainability action, we have initiated concrete measures that support these ambitious goals in various ways. It is very important to us that there is real change behind our goal. A development that brings a sustainable world a little closer, not only for Schubert, but for everyone.

Our sectors for sustainable packaging solutions

Especially in the fast-moving consumer goods sectors, with a short time-to-market and non-stop new product developments, it is not always easy to package more sustainably. This is where flexible packaging systems that can easily and quickly adapt to new packaging, innovative materials and changed processes can be of great help. With our modular machine concept and our services targeted to more sustainable process chains, we offer packaging solutions tailored to each of the sectors we work with, that are environmentally friendly and cost-effective.
